Complex at the center of the Universe ⚛
This incredible piece of art was created by Staszek Marek of Poland for the Architecture and Landscape Digital Art Challenge held by NVIDIA back in 2008. Click the image to enlarge.
The first thing I noticed was how it blended art and functionality in a futuristic living environment. It reminds me of an Arco from SimCity 2000. This living area is an all contained metropolis with residential areas, commercial areas, areas dedicated to recreation and relaxing, a miniature airport, a seaport, and integrated transportation systems. In the distance, you see a sort of man made atoll possibly to help protect the Arco from storms, hurricanes, and tidal waves. There are well spaced cut outs in the wall to allow ships to pass easily. This leads me to believe this habitat was constructed in the middle of the ocean, or possibly fairly far off the shore of a continent.
The main structure seems to house most of the residential living area, with areas for recreation, restaurants, and retail store mixed in, while the part that overshadows the airport appears to be focussed around commercial enterprises. I imagine more industrial enterprises would be housed in the lower sections of the structure.
The large tree in the center of the large structure appears to be symbolic as it’s flanked by a statue holding a ringed orb (Saturn?) and a female statue sitting on a ringed planet looking out towards the sea. The Greco-Roman architecture blends well with the modern lines in the rest of the structure.
